Why Are Automobiles as the Principal Mode of Travel?

Bakersfield Train Station, California As for automobile use, Reeder's (1956) research shows that the automobile has displaced public transportation as the principal mode of travel to and from work. Furthermore, proximity of public transportation facilities does not appear to influence or change transportation mode. In other words, those who already own an automobile will tend to continue using the automobile, even if public transportation is nearby. In addition, those who rely on public transportation will continue to travel the distances necessary to use it.
