How Does Distance Affect Modal Choice?

Red Line Railway, Los AngelesIn a subsequent study, Hadden (1964) extended Schnore's (1962) analysis by including individual characteristics as well as a structural variable in his model. The units of analysis were census tracts in Milwaukee, and his principal independent variables were median income, gross rent, availability of an automobile, and distance of the tract from the central business district. He found that distance, his structural variable, was more strongly related to modal choice than were any of the individual variables. Based on these data, and the close parallel between his analysis and that of Schnore (1962), Hadden (1964) also concluded that structural variables are crucial to understanding commuting decisions.
